Who doesn't like potatoes? They've had a bit of bad rap recently, though (the blight, the throwing ban etc), so it's nice to see Country Woman Magazine bringing all the good memories back with this fun competition -
"Pass the Potatoes
Win $500 for your sensational spuds.
Contest Deadline - August 01, 2010
Top Prize: $500
No matter the season, we love our spuds—which is why we're spotlighting them in Country Woman's new "Pass the Potatoes" recipe contest.
We're eager to see the versatile veggie mashed, scalloped, baked, boiled, roasted and whipped—in salads, snacks, main dishes, even cakes.
Recipes can include all varieties—from Yukon Gold to fingerling—as well as sweet potatoes and yams. So please pass a potpourri of your most appealing dishes.
Surprise us with appetizers like mini twice-baked potatoes, homemade chips with red pepper dip, and cheesy potato skins with bacon. Or how about a velvety cup of spicy sweet potato bisque, or a brimming bowl of potato cheddar soup or fennel potato chowder?
You can pick out a comforting entrée, such as potato pizza or a spud-filled pierogi with sour cream. Side dishes are welcome, too. Send around hash browns, classic potato pancakes, buttermilk potato bread, sweet potato fries or Grandma's German potato salad.
Don't forget to tempt us with tasty tater desserts, from potato chocolate cake and Southern sweet potato pie to mashed potato fudge.
We'll announce the winners in the April/May 2011 issue of Country Woman.

Brilliant. Why not give it a go, like me?
"Hi Country Woman,
Here are some fun, simple recipes that I like to knock out when mealtimes get boring. You’ve probably heard them all before, but sometimes the simple ones are the best, yes? If I win, could I have a postal order?
Iced Potato Creams
Preparation and patience are essential for this simple, fun dessert recipe. Mash your potatoes, then add cream to taste. Freeze for 168 hours, serve with sugars and wafer in ether individual or bigger, share size bowl. Good times!
Homogenised Potato
Delicately remove the outer coating each root produce with a clean, sharp edge, leaving the paler interior, in each case, intact. Subsequently divide each interior according to preference, though best results are often obtained through dividing into equal 2 gram quarters. Immerse the outcome in a boiling chemical compound of 2 parts hydrogen to one parts oxygen for as long as you like or until the quartered interiors yield to reasonable force, after which remove separate yielding interiors and compound. Apply whichever measures are necessary to transform the yielding quartered interiors into a homogenised paste. Season. Serve immediately.
12 O’clock Joe
Delicately remove the outer coating each root produce with a clean, sharp edge, leaving the paler interior, in each case, intact. Subsequently divide each interior according to preference, though best results are often obtained through dividing into equal 2 gram quarters. Immerse the outcome in a boiling chemical compound of 2 parts hydrogen to one parts oxygen for as long as you like or until the quartered interiors yield to reasonable force, after which separate the yielding interiors and compound. Apply whichever measures are necessary to transform the yielding quartered interiors into a homogenised paste. Do NOT season. Serve at 12 O’clock precisely.
Potato De Vitos
Peel and sand a bag of high grade potatoes into perfect spheres (this is important). Leave to cool in natural sunlight for a few hours, before squeezing gently between jeaned thighs (important!). While squeezing, draw your favourite Danny De Vito expressions, from memory, on a sheet of paper. Once all of your potatoes have been compressed, draw the expressions you’ve practiced onto the spheres, and serve in a fun bowl. Alternatively, print off and paste from the internet. Perfect for the holidays!
Enjoy! "
I think I'm in with a shout here, but don't let that put you off. Give it a go, I'll see you at the finish line!
